Smoking "Truth of Dare"

On Wednesday, January 25, seventh  graders will participate in the “Smoking:Truth or Dare” program.   This program is unique in that health care professionals team up with 7th grade teachers to view a video.  The video is stopped throughout in order for students to participate in various activities. The video, at times very graphic, shows segments of an autopsy of a person who had smoked all their life, a hairy tongue of a person who chews tobacco, and how smoking hastens the aging process.  Health care professionals participating in the program this year are:  Anita Brisley, RN, Allison Soerens, PA and Becky Wendorf, RN. Below are some picture.  Ask your child about what they learned.

Enlarged pictures have been filed.  See Mr. Dick if you would still like to see them.

Pam after emphysema

Pam Laffin started smoking cigarettes when she was 10 because she wanted to look older. Unfortunately, it worked. Cigarettes gave her emphysema which led to the loss of a lung. Her body was scarred by surgery, and the medication she had to take for the rest of her life left her with trembling hands and a bloated face. She spent the last few years of her life in a wheelchair fighting to breathe. At age 31, she died.

What's the tobacco industry doing to "make a difference" in this situation? Marketing a new candy-flavored cigarette that seems to be targeted to kids and teens. And Pam's two daughters are 11 and 14.
