PART TWO: HOW TO STUDY A TEXTBOOK Step
1 Survey
the chapter. The first step in studying a textbook is to survey the chapter. Have your child follow these steps. 1 Make note of the headings of each main section. 2 Look over all picture, maps, charts, tables, and graphs. 3 Read the summary at the end of the chapter. 4 Read through the study questions listed at the end of the chapter. 5 Finally, go back and make up a question from each main heading. For example, if the heading is “The Magna Carta,” you should ask, “What is the Magna Carta?” As you read the chapter try to answer these questions. Step 2
Read the chapter and take notes. After your child has surveyed the chapter, he or she should go back and read it all the way through. Notes should be taken on a separate sheet of paper. These should include:
· Answers to the questions formulated from the chapter headings. · A chronological listing of events that occur in the chapter. In addition, you child could take notes on index cards. Important facts (names of persons, terms to know, or significant concepts) are listed on the front of the card. The back should be used for listing important points that may be asked on the test. Step 3
Review the chapter After your child finishes reading the chapter, he or she should look over the notes and make sure he or she understands all the main points and how they interrelate. Then your child should answer the study questions given at the end of the chapter, as well as the questions formulated from the main headings. He or she should review all the notes and all the key points of the chapter. * Make copies of the Textbook Study Checklist on page 13 of this handbook. Give this checklist to your child for use when a test is assigned. |
